Rosa and Black Gold is inspired by the true story of Osage American Indian Rosa Hoots, whose colt Black Gold wins the 1924 Kentucky Derby, 100 years ago in May, 2024. Black Gold is undersized, and lacks the pedigree of the great Thoroughbred horses. It’s an era of racial discrimination, when women are a rarity in business, and no woman has ever before bred and owned a Kentucky Derby winner. But Rosa is no ordinary woman.
With everything against her, Rosa recruits an untested jockey and an aging, alcoholic trainer. Together with Black Gold, they bring people together and win America’s grandest race.
